SARP Allocated Number System Proposal

The South Australian Rally Panel have recently published a proposal for an allocated number system to replace the current seeding number system. We now have a poll looking for opinions on this proposal, and have included the proposal below. The SARally.com.au team applaud any proposals and initiatives such as this and look forward to discovering the opinions of competitors, officials, spectators and other stakeholders.

SARP Proposal Details
In an effort to reduce the large and increasing costs to event organisers associated with supplying new numbers to competitors at each event, SARP have recently discussed the possibility of introducing an allocated number system in place of the current seeding based numbers which change on a per event basis. The suggested advantages of allocated numbers include:

  1. Reduced costs to event organisers as new numbers will not need to be produced for every rally
  2. Reduced inconvenience for competitors by not having to change numbers for every event
  3. The possibility for competitors to apply for desired numbers
  4. The possibility to improve the ability for spectators to relate cars to classes by using a class based numbering system

One of the challenges of this system would be events such as Rally SA which incorporates ARC numbering and would lead to clashes with single and double digit numbers. It is expected that competitors will obtain/purchase their own numbers under the proposed new systems. The current suggested implementations of an allocated numbering system include:

  1. Allocated numbers beginning from 1 and allocated based on DPI from the previous year. Under this system it may be necessary for competitors to purchase multiple sets of numbers throughout the year due to events such as ROSA and the Tarmac Sprint where clashes would occur.
  2. Allocated numbers beginning from 100 and up. These could again be allocated based on DPI or, alternatively, competitors could apply for their desired numbers which would be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis. If a competitor's desired number is not available they would be allocated the first available number.
  3. Allocated numbers using a system similar to that used in off road racing where the first number would represent the 'class' the car was entered in i.e. P1 cars would be numbered 1xx, P2 cars 2xx etc. The numbers would be allocated according to the 2008 SARC class results; however competitors could request to be allocated another number within their class range. For example the current P5 class champion would be allocated 501 however could request 599 if they preferred.

In all cases it is envisaged that the number 1 will still be reserved and used by the current State Champion except for events such as Rally SA where this would clash.
