It's Official - Volunteers Get The Best Seat At The Rally!

Volunteers get the best view!

Passionate motorsport fans are being sought as volunteer race officials for the annual 2010 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally running from 21 to 23 May through the Fleurieu Peninsula and Adelaide Hills.

The success of the event - which is celebrating its 5th year - relies heavily on the efforts of more than 400 volunteer officials working in unison, taking on various roles from Stage Commander to Road Closure Official.

Officials Coordinator for the 2010 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally, Heather Cox, says that all over the world motorsport is run by volunteers.

"The Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is Round Two of the Australian Classic Tarmac Championship and the new Australian Modern Tarmac Championship, so working on an event like this is a dream come true for motorsport lovers," Ms Cox says.

"Very few motorsport fans realise that the men and women waving flags, clearing up debris and marshalling spectators are doing so just for the love of racing."

"For some people, the promise of a day of motor racing will get them out of bed before 7am on a Sunday. Competitors and Officials alike jump at the chance to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds and smells of competition, be it at a club level motorkhana, or the Formula 1 Grand Prix."

Ms Cox says that officiating is a great way to get involved in motorsport, giving participants invaluable experience, the best view of the race and many friendships that are formed by officials working together on events.

"It's not just seeing the cars race past you, it’s knowing that you are a part of putting the whole thing together," she says.

"The competitors, the officials, the crews and even the photographers chat and joke together, even when meeting for the first time. It’s a very symbiotic relationship – they all need one another to have the sort of fun they have at these events, so it's all very friendly."

"Some roles require specific licenses or have age restrictions, however a trainee license is available for interested people without any previous motorsport experience."

The 2010 asp / Cut Price Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is run by the Southern Districts Car Club, a non-profit organisation with all profits supporting motorsport in the Southern Area.
