The second running of the Mount Alma Mile Hillclimb is happening this weekend, the 10th and 11th April in Hindmarsh Valley. A record number of competitors have entered, and 150 of them will take on the 19% slope to determine the winner.

The 2009 event hosted a wide range of vehicles, from exotic and performance vehicles, dedicated rally, drift and hillclimb cars, to clubman and kit cars and road registered daily drivers. The 2010 entry list features all of those, plus an off road buggy, a Lotus Elise Cup and the Renault 5 Turbo from the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again”.

The Hillclimb is run along a 1.6km stretch of the Mount Alma Road, 3.5km from the Victor Harbor to Yankalilla Road at Hindmarsh Valley. A run along the ‘Mile’ is eight turns, two chicanes, a total climb of 140 metres and 18 gear changes, all in the space of 43 seconds for last year’s winner, Kevin Mackrell. The road will be closed for the event from 11am until 5.30pm on Saturday 10 April and 8.30 until 5.30pm on Sunday 11 April.

Parking and entry to the event is free, and volunteers from the Southern Districts Car Club and Cure4CF will be manning a canteen next to the start line. A bus service has been arranged to ferry spectators from the start to a spectator point further along the mile, and other spectator points can be reached via a short but steep walk. Spectators are welcome to visit the Service Park, where all the cars will return after their runs, giving you a great chance to see these machines up close, and chat to the drivers.

Weather is predicted to be cool, so rug up, wear sensible shoes, and come down to Mount Alma to enjoy the cars, the competition and the atmosphere.
