Scouts really do “Do it All!"

Bates/Taylor

Scouts SA have taken up naming rights for the 2010 Rally of South Australia, the 5th round of the Australian Rally Championship.

Scouts Rally SA is 3 days of exciting motorsport including four night special stages at Angaston and a top ten shootout on the Friday, all within a short drive of Adelaide.

This is the second year Scouts SA have been involved in the Rally, although Scouts have had a long association with Rallying in Australia. The current Australian Rally Champion Driver, Simon Evans, and many other past competitors including SA’s Steve Winwood, Craig and Leah Fox, Mark Scrymgour and Mike Dale were all Scouts, some gaining their passion for motorsport while in Scouts.

The partnership is more than injecting funds; this partnership will involve direct participation by local Scouts in the running of the Rally and will provide Scouts Rally SA with additional credibility and continuity, and add a stronger community focus to the event.

Scouts are assisting the Rally to reduce its carbon footprint by working together to plant 10,000 trees the weekend before the Rally.

“The aim of scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual and social development of young people so that they may take a constructive place as members of their local communities,” said Dan Ryan, Scouts SA CEO.

“Getting our Scouts involved in many levels of a national motor sport event will serve that aim very well, and provide many relevant opportunities and experiences”

Event Director and Clerk of Course Ivar Stanelis said that he is delighted to enter into the new association with Scouts SA. “It is exciting to have closer ties to the largest youth development organisation in South Australia, and I am confident it will be beneficial to both organizations,” he said.

“There are interesting parallels between the Scouts movement and Rallying – both involve high levels of teamwork, leadership, adventure and challenge and both are extremely detailed environments where ‘Be Prepared’ is the byword,” he said.

The Scouts will showcase their own motorsport activities at the Angaston Recreation Park Super Special Stages, at the Mt Crawford Forest Stages, and the Service Park at Mt Pleasant. The Scouting recycling business will also come into play at all venues, whilst there will be many opportunities to fill volunteer roles at all levels during the event.

Scouts SA prepares young people for business and community leadership and aims to help them achieve their full potential. Goals, principles and values, and further information are at www.sa.scouts.com.au Scouts Rally SA, held in the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and Mt Barker
